Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Awards $72,465 to Teach Drivers how to Share the Road with Commercial Trucks

Phoenix, AZ – The Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) has awarded the Arizona Trucking Association Foundation (ATA Foundation), formerly  Arizona Transportation Education Foundation, $72,465 via grant funds for FY2022.

The grant allows ATA Foundation to continue its mission to advocate for highway safety through its highly acclaimed “Share the Road” and “Teens and Trucks” programs.

Specifically, this grant allows ATA Foundation to use its mobile “Share the Road” commercial trailer with the “Stay Out of the No-Zone” graphics to travel around Arizona sharing its safety message.

This year’s grant also allows the ATA Foundation to use funds to participate in the Public Education Program on broadcast television and radio. This will help the ATA Foundation reach additional drivers that we’ve been unable to reach during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additionally, this year’s grant allows the ATA Foundation to purchase a driver simulator that is used to train commercial drivers. This way ATA Foundation can virtually put drivers behind the wheel of a commercial truck so they can simulate the experience of driving a big rig.

“Our Teens and Trucks/Share the Road program is effective in teaching drivers how to safely share the road with commercial trucks,” stated ATA Foundation Executive Director Tony Bradley. “We are excited about the additional resources provided in this year’s grant and look forward to rolling them out in the near future.”

“Share the Road” program has three objectives:

  • Educate all highway users, including passenger car drivers, motorcyclists and commercial vehicle operators, how to share the road safely to reduce truck-involved crashes.
  • Expand public awareness of sharing the road safely with trucks hauling over-dimensional loads.
  • Intensify outreach to several key groups, including novice drivers, senior citizens and others unaware of how their actions around large commercial vehicles can create unsafe traffic situations.

For more information or to schedule a Share the Road or Teens and Trucks event, please contact Tony Bradley at 602-850-6005 or visit www.sharetheroadaz.com.

The Arizona Trucking Association Foundation, formerly the Arizona Transportation Education Foundation (ATEF), is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to promote and advance highway safety and a safe trucking industry through research, education and promotional projects.
